Warriors Sound

Tim Roye

Warriors broadcaster Tim Roye talks about his path to NBA radio play-by-play starting with his upbringing in Connecticut before breaking into broadcasting while a student at Utica College in upstate New York.

He says his early love of Boston Bruins hockey and describing NHL games airing on TV into a tape recorder at home as a kid, plays into his current style and the speed required to call Warriors games in the modern NBA. Doing minor league hockey in his first job benefitted him in learning how to not look down at notes and potentially miss important action.

Stops in Birmingham, Phoenix and eventually his first NBA job in Sacramento with the Kings paved the way to the success with the Warriors. Breaking sports news stories on the radio is a particular love in the process of sharing the larger framework of team stories with fans and listeners.

He explains the production process behind Warriors radio broadcasts and shares advise with aspiring broadcasters looking to learn keys to the trade including being well-read, observant and prepared for all aspects of a broadcast.

The story of his ‘The Bay’s Team is the Best Team’ call from the 2015 Warriors Championship is also detailed.
